Clermont-Ferrand, capital city of Auvergne, was given the nickname “black city” because of its many buildings built in Volvic stone. This dark grey material, which has volcanic origins, gives a distinct look to the historic center of Clermont, especially with the imposing cathedral Notre Dame de l’Assomption.
